A Brief History of Natural Soap
Soap has been valued for millennia for its ability to clean the body, clothing and households. Soap is a craft which is often neglected in history whether it be a discussion of Ancient history,19th century skills or of the colonial era.
Soap was made at the time of it's inception til the first half of the19th century with very basic ingredients that underwent a natural chemical change called saponification. Oils (vegetable or fats), water or soft water and potash (pearlash) blended with the proper technique will yield soap, and it may be scented with oils and herbs.Using Only Natural Whole Ingredients gives You a Skin Healing Cold Processed Soap.
It is recorded that the Babylonians were making soap
around 2800 B.C. and that it was known to the Phoenicians around 600 B.C. These early references to soap and soap making that has been found were for the use of soap in the cleaning of textile fibers such as wool and cotton in preparation for weaving into cloth.
The oils used to make soap varied according to the region in which the soap was being produced.
Through the 19th century potash [pearlash] was obtained by filtering water through wood ashes in an ash hopper until the solution was strong enough to float an egg.
Potash is the residue left after the water has been evaporated from the solution described above. Pearlash is the final product when that residue is baked to remove impurities.
